Concerted action led by SEA-Unite members has won an above average pay rise and improvement in conditions for most staff at SkyCity. This includes:
• 5% on most rates, 8% on the minimum rates and 9% for security guards
• Reimbursement of Gaming licences from next year
• Sick Leave accumulation to 40 days
• More secure of hours for part-time staff and those on regular rosters
• Drycleaning for gaming and finance supervisors
• Fewer unpaid meetings for dealers
• Negotiations to continue for salaried staff with working parties for the riggers, security and wardrobe.
We were also able to knock back plans by the company to bring in proposals like split shifts that had been imposed in the IEA’s.
While it may seem unfair we don’t resent all staff benefiting from this. The only regret is that we could have got more if the 50% of staff not in a union had joined in time to be part of the struggle.
But there is still a lot to do before the next round of negotiations over the Collective Agreement. Every day SEA-Unite is in discussions with the company over rosters, hours of work of part-timers, disciplinary actions, correct rates of pay, workloads, additional duties being imposed, petty harassment etc. The list goes on and on.
It is very likely you will need help while you are working here. SEA was formed by SkyCity workers so we could have a union we controlled that made decisions for us. We have professional advice and support from Unite which is the most dynamic and fastest-growing union in the country.
Help protect yourself and get a better deal for all workers at SkyCity.
JOIN SEA-UNITE TODAY!
Because negotiations are continuing for SEA-Unite members who are on salary we need to have input into your claims. SEA-Unite gave the legally required two-weeks notice for a stopwork meeting so members could attend the combined union rally on August 23. The company decided to try to stop members attending at the last minute and threatened members who exercised their rights. Those who defied the intimidation were not paid for the two hours. We will challenge this in court.
